How Long Does It Take For Acne Scars to Fade Naturally?

It takes superficial acne scarring a minimum of 6 months to fade naturally. Deeper and darker scars take a minimum of 12 months to fade naturally. Some scars take years to improve, and some are permanent. Even if permanent, we offer treatment options that can improve their appearance.

The 6 Most Common Types of Acne Scars

If you have chronic acne, scarring may feel never-ending. Although your scars fade, new scars form each month.

Your skin may display one or more of the scars below:

#1 Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation:

This is the most common type of scarring post-acne and other skin abrasion. It leaves your skin darker than before, and gradually fades over time.

#2 Ice pick acne scars:

These are small, deep, and narrow indentations most often found on the cheeks.

#3 Boxcar scars:

These are broader depressions with sharply defined edges. They’re most common among those with chronic acne.

#4 Rolling scars:

These scars are less defined than ice pick and boxcar, leaving behind a wave-like skin texture.

#5 Atrophic:

These scars are most often the result of cystic acne. They leave flat, shallow depressions on the skin.

#6 Hypertrophic/keloid:

These are raised lumps of scar tissue that appear after acne has healed.
